Writing career grants: from postdoc to group leader

Content The transition from postdoc to group leader is considered the hardest jump in the academic career path, where ultimately only a small percentage of postdocs achieve starting their own research group. In the first part of the course, we will analyze the key components that make a CV successful, the importance of demonstrating independence, mobility, and innovative ideas, as well as further essential components, such as building a strong academic network.
We will have a short look at career grants offered by the SNSF and ERC, and discuss which funding scheme is more suitable for different needs. Finally, we will discuss how to write the different sections of such grant proposals, including analyzing proposals that have been funded. Participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their grant proposals (within the time restraints of the course).
Learning objectives
  • Become more confident about funding opportunities for becoming a group leader;
  • Discuss how to build a CV that matches the expectations of funding bodies;
  • Analyze and discuss the sections of a career grant and how to write the different documents;
  • Be able to formulate an action plan for a career path in academia.
