Supervision training for postdocs

Content As postdoc you are taking over more responsibility. In this workshop we will focus on supervisor skills necessary in the supervisor role. We will ask questions of expectations on both sides as supervisor and as PhD candidate. Further we will reflect on good agreements for the supervision process.
Course objectives

In this course, participants:

  • reflect on their own experience during their PhD and collect conclusions for the new role as supervisor
  • become aware of the different skills as supervisor
  • get conscious about possible problems during a supervision
  • know the importance of clear defined agreements
  • develop an action plan for their own forthcoming supervision processes
  • know principles of supervision in comparison with coaching/consulting like question types, one’s own questioning attitude
  • practice how a meeting with a PhD candidate could be designed
  • consider ways to practice cross-cultural sensitivity
  • understand the role that a supervisor should take to promote research integrity
  • develop a guideline for supervision meetings.
Instructor Dagmar Engfer, MSc Geography, Coach and Consultant for Career Development, Certified Member of BSO (Berufsverband für Coaching, Supervision und Organisationsberatung), lecturer and trainer at universities and in different organisations and companies.
Target participants Postdocs of all disciplines. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences in exchange with the group.
